"desktop.ini" and "Thumbs.db" preventing proper "Move Here" functionality
I just upgraded to Windows 7 by buying a new hard drive and installing a fresh install of Windows 7 on it. Then I went to move my data files from the old drive to the new one and here is what happened. I selected all the files/folders in "My Documents" on the old drive with the exception of the special folders such as "My Pictures" and such. I right-clicked and dragged them over to the new "My Documents" directory and selected to "Move Here". Nearly an hour later I looked and saw that many of the folders that had been moved still existed on the old drive. All the data files had been moved, but the empty directories were still there for many of them. In looking through them it was because each folder that did not get erased from the old drive contained either a "desktop.ini" and/or a "Thumbs.db" file beneath them in the structure somewhere. How in the world did this one get past beta testing. Oh, yeah right, I am the beta tester. I keep forgetting how Microsoft does business. Does anyone have an idea how to prevent this from happening short of waiting for SP1 (or two)?

Hi,This should not be a bug but by design.I tried on my machine, it is normal when copying a file with those two system files, several windows will pop up repeatly asking if you will copying system file "desktop.ini" or "Thumbs.db", if you choose skip, both files will restore in the original directories. You can also click "Yes" to move them together. Your data will be moved successfully any way.In addition, simply delete them from the directory won't be harmful. They will be created automatically in the new direction.

These files ended up on my desktop. I must have been saving photo backgrounds on the desktop to cause it. Can I safely delete these files now? When I attempt to open the desktop.ini I get a Notepad file: [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769 IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183 When I attempt to open the thumbs.db file I get a Caution Box warning that the OS uses these types of files and that I may do harm to my system. It seems like I can open and delete the Thumbs.db file and the notepad file desktop.ini from reading your response. I just wanted to double check. Thanks, Sam
